There was the vast ocean first that gave me the kind of comfort I wanted before I fell in love with the mountains. That was when I learned about the essence of solitude. Seeing her gives me so much comfort. Now that I’ve been away from the ocean for quite some time now, I can’t help but crave that kind of comfort she gives just like the very first time we met in the summer of 1998 in Appari, Cagayan.
We can get comfort from a lot of things around us—family, movie theater, classroom; the trees and animals around, the rivers, the stars, the moon, the sun; eating your favorite food, playing music; or wandering through the woods. But there’s a different kind of comfort that I want to get every once in a while. The kind of comfort that makes every neuron in my nervous system relaxed. The kind of comfort that helps me connect to the world of nature and spirituality. It’s the time when all I want to do is to be with myself.
I believe that there’s an exquisite form of comfort that comes from being alone while overlooking the ocean. Nothing beats that if it’s being done as the waves are crawling to the shore; from having the opportunity to just fritter the time away; from staring blankly at the wall; from looking over the horizon as the sun sets or rises; from wandering aimlessly through the woods; or anything that makes the world around me undisturbed.

I completely understand the comfort that comes from solitude….it’s a necessity for me. I need to find a quiet place by myself for some time every day, and when I don’t get it, there’s a price to be paid, by me, and to a degree by the people around me. I am also an ocean person. The more time I can spend by the sea, the better. Love your photograph and your words! :0)

According to psychologist Ester Schaler Buchholz, Ph.D., who in her book, The Call of Solitude, introduced the concept of solitude or alonetime, describing it as “a basic need,” as essential and universal as the need to bond with others. She comes to this belief through a series of infant studies and analysis of historical and anthropological data, as well as studies on how meditation, rest and relaxation bolster the immune system. When we don’t get enough solitude, she says, “we get very out of touch with ourselves; we get forgetful; we get sloppy.”
Thank you for sharing your beautiful words too, Jane. That is so much appreciated! I hope you’ll come back for more … 🙂

Stunning photo! I agree one of the most comforting places is the beach… If only I am closer to it, I would be so dark now haha, not a good swimmer though, but I just love the kind of comfort the place can offer…
Have a great evening my friend… 🙂
I’m just curious, where is this place?

Bro, that is one great writing on “comfort.” To be alone, to reconnect with yourself and nature’s elements is a beautiful experience that brings peace, contentment, meaning and happiness. I had moments like that on my walks to the beach by myself… Its like being healed from all the turmoils of the world. Wonderful writing. Serene photo. God bless you and your family.

Your pristine photo sure brings comfort to me! It exudes peace and calm. I wholeheartedly agree Sony that we should enjoy some “quiet time.” It’s a great way to slow down the pace. I think it gives us time to reflect on what’s truly important in life. It gives us time to prioritize. Better yet, it’s a natural stress reducer. Spiritually speaking, it gives me an opportunity to be thankful for the many blessings that come my way. I could go on and on. Anyway, very nicely written Sony. Thanks for sharing your little piece of paradise. 🙂

Solitude puts me in touch with my deepest feelings and allows time for previously unrelated thoughts to interact, to reestablish themselves into new forms. Therefore, it brings harmony to my mind.
You are one of the many people, Donna, who certainly knows what I’m talking about here based on your blog posts.
You are welcome and thank you more for sharing your words with purpose always!

Yeah, because nature has countless of wonderful things … some are obvious, some are hidden, some needs more and experience and time to realize their respective beauties, and some require higher awareness to discover the same. And I think, what I see around is just the tip of the iceberg, Nandini. I won’t stop looking and searching for what nature can offer and what she’s hiding in and out there …

All along our North Welsh coastline there are some lonely and deserted beaches, especially in winter time. I love going for long walks along them with my camera. I might not photograph anything but I do find it comforting to drag the camera along
